Simmons and Zackery Leads Monarchs Past Stampede
Atlanta, GA — 5/7/2018
First year team, Atlanta Monarchs, makes a royal statement in their first game with a 92-61 win over the GA Stampede. After trailing by one point for only a few seconds in the first quarter, the Atlanta Monarchs’ quickly established and maintained their dominance over the GA Stampede.
Meighan Simmons led all scorers with 22 points, on 8 of 15 shooting from the field, 4 of 9 from behind the arc. Kellindra Zackery posted her first double double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Cherelle George made a major impact off the bench with 9 points, 6 assists and 5 steals.
Coach Marynell Meadors, proud of her team’s performance says, “They played really well for only having 5 ½ hours of practice last week.” However, Coach Meadors did mention that the team has much more work to do, pointing out that she was very pleased with the 1st-3rd quarters but wasn’t happy in the 4th because she felt the team took their foot off the gas, scoring only 15 points.
The Monarchs head to Nashville on the 12th to take on the Music City Icons. As signed players graduate and continue to roll in from overseas, the Monarchs will have their full team for their home opener on the 18th against the Dade County Lady Bulls.

On April 7, 2018, several team owners in the WBCBL met in Atlanta, GA to discuss the upcoming season, necessary changes to advance the mission of the league and the bright future in store for the organization.
Founder and President Willie McCray facilitated the meeting, encouraging dialogue between owners entering their first season and owners in the league for a longer term. The Director of Officials offered some great insight into the history of the league and its growth since inception. One of our Regional Directors shared stories of the relationships that she has forged with community leaders in her area and offered an abundance of ideas of how she has assisted other owners in (and outside of) her region. What priceless information!
The league’s ‘benefit package’ was revisited. Why do owners choose the WBCBL? Wherein lies our value? What sets our league apart? How have we managed to stand the test of time in comparison to so many other leagues? These questions were truly ‘food for thought.’ By the end of the meeting, there was an overwhelming sense of excitement about the season, a greater understanding about and commitment to the roles of the administration and owners and a deeper determination to help propel the league to greater prominence; to, in fact, be the premier professional development league for women’s basketball we have always strived to be!
