The Georgia Soul women's professional basketball team tips off its second season Sunday, May 7th with a home game against Women's Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) Atlantic division opponent the Capital City Cougars. The start time is 4:00 P.M. and the game will be played at Laney High School, home of the 2017 state champion Lady Wildcats. The Soul will aim to defend last season's division title, but team owner Ernesia Wright has a more ambitious goal for her talented group of former collegiate stars: "Instead of just winning the regional tournament, our goal this year is to win the national tournament," Wright said in a telephone interview Wednesday. The Soul finished last season ranked #7 in the nation after finishing with an 11-4 record. Led by former Hephzibah and East Carolina standout Lacoya Terry and former Laney and Francis Marion star Eboni Fields, the team was eliminated in the first round of the national tournament, which was held in San Antonio, after they won the Atlantic region tournament. Terry was named to the WBCBL All Star team and Fields garnered honorable mention recognition. The team also features Wilka Montout, who played collegiately for the University of South Carolina, winner of last season's NCAA tournament. Also returning will be Morgan Stroman (Miami University) and Morgan Jennings (Auburn University). When the Soul's season begins, the two Morgans will be fresh off a run in the Romanian professional league. Newcomers include former Augusta University stars Breonna O'Conner and Kariel Hutt, who led the Lady Jaguars to the sweet 16 round of the 2016 NCAA tournament. Also joining the team for season two are Ciara Lyons, a former Glenn Hills and Lander star, and Monique Martin, who played her collegiate basketball at Middle Tennessee State after averaging more than 40 points per game during high school as a Thomson Bulldog. The Georgia Soul’s schedule and information about the team and its mission can be found at http://www.georgiasoulbasketball.com/ If you would like more information about this topic, please contact Ernesia Wright at (706) 755-8059 or email at [email protected]. -Chad Cook AUG BBALL/ GA SOUL
